Monday, Monday, Can't Trust That Day

Among Pastors, I am probably strange, but Mondays in the office are always important and therapeutic for me. They are especially great after a wonderful Lord's Day.

So here goes:
  • Terrific 3rd week for Avalanche Ranch. A number of regulars were gone on family vacations, but the kids invited their friends so there were more kids this week than last.
  • Saturday, the 3rd thru 5th graders had a picnic at Oscar Scherer State Park. They fished, ate and played games. Oscar Scherer is a great place to camp and see much of the way Osprey used to look.
  • Darlene Bohannon started playing the piano for us in the 8:30 AM service. She is outstanding. Pray about someone to take over leading the worship. As I told Paul Harrison, I know why he enjoyed leading the worship for all those years. Listening to you all sing the old hymns is a real joy.
  • Missionary Rick Arnold, along with his wife Elizabeth and 2 of his 4 children, Alyssalyn and Arickson, were with us in the service. They are just back from Senegal and ministering to the Soninke people. We were able to give them almost $600 for special needs they have. Continue to pray for their medical issues. They are flying back the 2nd week of August.
  • I love the enthusiasm of the kids in Avalanche Rach . They sing. They shout. They remember the verses. They put up with me calling them "ugly". It's too bad it only goes 2 more weeks.
  • Carrie and the Student Ministry made us cookies to thank the church for getting them to camp. I am grateful for the work that she is doing in our student ministry. She is a real leader!
  • Last night we didn't have church service so Sara and I spent a few hours with some friends. We grilled steaks and cooled down in their pool. I didn't want to leave.
  • This morning, I got off to a good start preparing for the next installment of of "People Worth Knowing, Lives Worth Living". I won't tell you who, but just think about this question: "If God told you to do something that made no sense and went against all your upbringing, would you obey?"
  • We had a terrific prayer walk. I always come back refreshed to look at the mission field that God has called us to. Of course, I always end up sweaty in this heat!
There was more. But what God is doing around here is wonderful in our sight. I can see people growing spiritually. We are starting to pick up new people. We will be baptizing a young woman very soon.

We may not be able to trust Mondays... but we can trust the Lord who rules Mondays!

Cal Ripken

I remember seing Hank Aaron hit Number 715 on the television. I remember seeing Bill Maseroski win the 1960 World Series with a home run to beat the Yankees on television. I loved both moments. I am a baseball fan. My 2 favorite teams are the Chicago Cubs because I believe in hope and the New York Yankees because I believe in excellence.

But the night I watched Cal Ripken break Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak was an unparalleled joy. I caught myself with tears trickling down my cheeks because here was a man being celebrated for doing his job, doing it well and doing it consistently over a long period of time. For 21 minutes they cheered. And he ran around the track shaking hands with people who knew what it was to always show up at work.

I was also watching the night he decided to sit one out. At first, no one noticed because they took for grnated that he would be at his position. But when the first pitch was thrown, the opposing team, the Yankees, came to the top of the dugout and applauded. They had seen the end of a record breaking streak that might just last longer than Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak. They knew what it took to play that many in a row. And they honored the man.

This Sunday Cal Ripken enters the Baseball Hall of Fame. They honor him with his induction. He honored the Hall and baseball with his play.

What a Weekend!

I spent Thursday and Friday with my daughter and son in law in Islamorado. Steve's grandparents own a place on the gulf. They kindly allow family members to use it. The water was warm and clear. the snorkeling was unbelievably. We caught Snappers and Grunts at night. It was a real blessing from the lord. The Keys are a world unto themselves. And to spend even some time there is to adopt a relaxed attitude. 2 days were wonderful, but I would have loved some more.

But I wouldn't have missed this Sunday for anything.

AVALANCHE RANCH: Kids were inviting their friends. We have the opportunity to talk to children about Jesus. Our adults are doing a great job in leading.

MORE BAPTISMS: We baptized 3 generations of a family on Sunday morning. I am so thankful to be a part in baptizing 8 new believers in the past 3 weeks.

EVANGELISM: God does the saving. It is entirely of His grace. But we get the joy of playing a part in making the introduction. The grandmother, mother and daughter we baptized are the result of a total church ministry. They were invited to our church by church members when they moved in next door. The Student ministry touched the life of the daughter as she became active. The Sunday school reached the mom and grandmom. They came to faith in Christ and have started growing. And part of that growth was a desire to obey the Lord and follow His example and be baptized.

GENESIS STUDY: Our Sunday nights are informal and set around tables where discussion can take place. We are going through the foundational book of the Bible: Genesis. I am convinced that if we get Genesis right, we will get the rest of the Bible correctly. As we studied the flood last night, we were hit again by the truth of God's Judgment and God's Grace. He judges the world because of the violence and corruptness of that world. The phrase "Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord" reminds us that even in judgment God gives grace.

AFTER SUNDAY NIGHT: We are all busy people, but I watched last night after the service as little groups of people were standing around talking, laughing and enjoying each other. It's a marvelous sight for any pastor. Even after Sara and I left, as we drove past the parking lot, there were people just hanging out with each other.

So I am a grateful pastor right now. Grateful that God has called me to pastor FBC, Osprey. Grateful that I am a part of this family of believers.

For the next few days...

Early Thursday morning, Sara and I are joining our daughter and son in law in the place I have asked the Lord to reserve for us in the millenium - The Florida Keys!

We are only there for 2 days, but as any parrot head knows the Keys are more a state of mind than a location. But for the next few days, my mind and my body will be in the same place.

God's Limitless Perfection

My wonderful wife and I have been reading through Psalm 119. We aren't reading it through in one sitting neither of us could sit still long enough. I have enjoyed seeing again the dimensions of God's Word that David so artfully puts down to poetry and song. But I came across a verse that I had never fastened on.
I have seen a limit to all perfection, but Your command is without limit. (119:96, HCSB)

Although never attaining it, I have always looked at the achievements of people and marveled at their perfection
  • The Sistine Chapel
  • Don Larson's perfect game
  • Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points
  • My daughter Becky walking down the aisle
  • The sunset on Siesta Key
  • A coral reef in the Cayman's

You probably have your own list. But as perfect or nearly perfect as these may be. Each has its' limits.

  • The Sistine Chapel must be renovated.
  • Don Larson was never perfect again.
  • Wilt retired.
  • Well, Becky's pretty much still perfect. :)
But God's law, God's commands, God's precepts are all limitless in their perfection. They never fade, never need renovation, never retire, never grow old. They are always suffecient to communicate to us what God commands. They are always perfect in letting us know His promises.

His commands are limitless. Working on obeying them is a lifelong committment.

Zimbabwe

2 years ago, I went to Zimbabwe at the inviotation of the gracious people of Sarasota Baptist Church where Dr. Michael Landry is Senior Pastor. We had an amazing time with hundreds of people saved in the churches we preached at. We also gave testimony at several schools each day in which we were unable to speak personally with those who made decisions.

We had exchanged almost $300 US into Zim dollars when we entered and disocovered the joy of being millionaires. We got thick bricks of Zimbabwean currency, which was even then pretty much worthless. Gas was non-existent. Operation Trash Removal aimed at those areas where opposition to Dictator Robert Mugabe's was strongest had destroyed the homes of thousands of innocent families.

AIDS deaths were epidemic. The pastor of the church where I preached had to leave because of the death of his brother from AIDS.

This African nation has the world's highest inflation rate, even at the official estimate of 4,500 percent. Unofficially, independent economists in Europe say inflation rates are as high as 11,000 percent and rising. The U.S. ambassador to Zimbabwe, Christopher Dell, estimates the inflation rate will rise to well over 1.5 million percent before December.

The cost of basic foodstuff and services required monthly by a Zimbabwean family of five was estimated in March 2007 at Z$1.7 million (US$136, according to the official government exchange rate). The monthly salary for an average urban worker, according to a survey done by ZWNews, starts at Z$90,000 (US$7.20) -– not enough to buy a 2-liter bottle of cooking oil (Z$500,000). An average income is less than US$1 a day.


And Christians have been moved to respond:

Ray Motsi, pastor of Central Baptist Church in Bulawayo, says his church members really didn't have a choice in responding to the needs of their fellow countrymen -– the needs walked through the door one Sunday. It happened two years ago, after Operation Clean up the Trash, when the government demolished homes that allegedly had been built illegally. Those left without a home or a job were forced back to the villages with no way to support themselves.

One pastor says basic needs of the poor are being eroded right before the churches' eyes. "We can't keep watching," he says. "People are suffering. The church is responding in a limited way. The church is quietly helping the needy. There's not a lot of money to help out or to be spared, but God's people must respond."

The church has always been more concerned about salvation and tithing, but are we limiting God when the church functions like that?" Motsi asks. "God deals with the nations. He feeds the poor and heals the sick. He wants the nation of Zimbabwe for His purpose and glory. God is redefining the role of the church in Zimbabwe."

The Moving of the Holy Spirit

John 3:8 - "The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

I have been praying about the "apparent" lack of decisions within our church ministry. I say "apparent" because God is always at work in the lives of His people. We preach, pray, live and witness but it is God who gives spiritual increase. I hate to admit it but, there have been times when I have given the increase and I have learned that kind of fruit never lasts and never is only a pale, false imitation of what God does.

But I have been concerned.

Yesterday, we baptized two 11 year old boys. They had been saved through our Children's Ministry. They had been followed up on. With children, we always want to make certain why they are making these decisions. We have 3 more from our children's ministry who will be following the Lord in the next few weeks.

Then in the invitation 4 members of the same family came forward to join the church. They had been saved previously but wanted to join. They had been baptized in another denomination, so we made plans for their baptism.

In our services there seems to be a new enthusiasm for the Lord, His Word and His work. The Holy Spirit's work in lives has shown itself in growing numbers in Bible Study on Sundays and Wednesdays. He has been working in the concern of people for those who do not know Jesus. His work has been apparent in people helping other believers both spiritually and financially. God has done and is doing a great thing.

I love when the breeze of God's Holy Spirit moves in our church.

Avalanche Ranch

When we first got to FBC, Osprey, we had Vacation Bible School the first week after school got out. The reason for this: Get VBS out of the way so people can take vacations. It really didn't matter that our target audience was sick of school and anything remotely resembling that.



Then we moved it to later on in the summer and had some success. I know of at least 2 families who have become a big part of our ministry here because of those years. But as we looked at the effectiveness of this ministry we realized we were spending huge amounts of money for a small return both spiritually and numerically.


So we listed alternatives:
  • Get rid of VBS: In a retirement area there was a diminishing number of children and we were becoming just another week for harried mothers to get their children out of the house.

  • Move it to the evening: One look at the faces of our children's workers made me fear for my life.

  • Status Quo: After all, if VBS was good enough for my family who helped to plant this church 95 years ago, it's good enough now.
That reasoning sealed it. We were going to change VBS. And so we did.


We changed our material from Lifeway to Group. We determined that we would make the children the sole determiners of the time and place of our VBS.


But the biggest change was the time. We moved from 5 week day sessions to 5 straight Sunday sessions. We would do VBS when the kids were regularly there. There were several benefits.
  • We used the same children's workers with a few added helpers. The people who loved the children and were loved by the children were the natural choices.
  • We livened up the summer doldrums. For 5 weeks in the summer our auditorium took on the theme for VBS. Both services loved the decorations.
  • Most importantly, the summer VBS allowed the pastor to wear whatever he wanted to wear even to the Traditional early service!
  • It highlighted our Children's Ministry. We had spent money on staff for the Student Ministry but very little on children's ministry.

What has been the result?

  • We reach the same number of children as we did, BUT, they are now used to coming on Sunday mornings so it's easier to transition back into our regular year around ministry.
  • We have given over $5,000 to specific missionaries because of our boys vs girls penny contest that also includes the adults.
  • It changed the way we do Kids Zone (our children's church). We threw out the same old, same old methods.
  • We have reached more families.
  • Each year, children give their hearts to Jesus. They are dealt with not just by a loving adult but by a loving adult who knows how to talk with children and determine if they're really ready.

Avalanche Ranch starts on July 15th for us. It has quit being a drudgery and started being a joy. I am so stoked about this. It can't get here quick enough!

All I Needed to Know Is in Genesis... well, almost

Have you ever thought about the importance of Genesis? Many of the issues we face and controversies we deal with would be understood more clearly and dealt with if we understood Genesis. For example:

  • Is there a God? Yes, and He is involved in life
  • Do people have value? They are created in the image of God
  • Why is there such evil in the world? Like with Adam and Eve we are insistent on going our own way.
  • How does God want people to approach him? We approach God on the basis of His holiness.
  • Why can’t families get along? Like Cain and Abel, if we are not in harmony with God, we will be in conflict with our family.
  • Does God set standards for right and wrong and is there a penalty for disobeying those standards? Noah was told to build an ark because God was going to judge the world for its disobedience.
  • Is God all powerful? He was able to flood the world.
  • Is there a right and wrong religion? God confused the languages at Babel because they were attempting a man made religion.
  • Does God intervene in the lives of people? He told Abraham to get up and go. God led him through his travels.
  • What is the basis of God’s call on people? It is entirely by grace apart from works of any kind. Abram was no different from any of the people in his homeland.
  • Through which line does God’s blessing flow? God sovereignly moved through the line of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

This is just a partial list through chapter 15. There are others I could list. You ought to make up your own list. Genesis will contain the answers you need for the questions you have.

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,


When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

  • He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
  • He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
  • He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
  • He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
  • He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
  • He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
  • He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

  • He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

  • He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
  • He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
  • He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

  • For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
  • For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
  • He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
  • He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
  • He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
  • He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
  • He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.
